Community Service Co-Chair
Sheila Collins |
Sheila Collins served in Chile from 1980-82 in a rural orphanage where she began a Head Start program for pre-schoolers. Until her retirement in 2015, Sheila was the Associate Director of the Learning Abroad Center at the University of Minnesota. As the associate director she managed all study, work, intern, and volunteer programs administered by the LAC. Her other professional experience includes social work with immigrant families and international education spanning high school through university.
Sheila joined the MNRPCV board in 2015 and co-chairs the Community Service Committee. The community service committee organizes monthly volunteer opportunities for Minnesota RPCVs. These included highway clean ups, home repair projects, community garden maintenance, food shelf packing and distribution, and many more. Sheila’s motivation for joining the Peace Corps was two fold--she wanted to make a difference in the world and she wanted to have an adventure outside her comfort zone. These have remained her motivation for continuing to volunteer in her local community. She stills want to make a difference and is continually invigorated by these experiences.
